About Dr Towlerton
Dr Towlerton specialises in the assessment and non surgical treatments for the back, neck and legs. He has treated many elite athletes and Olympic medal winners from a wide range of sports for over two decades.
He has helped many patients with refractory pain following operations, complex regional pain syndrome, shingles, peripheral nerve pain, myofascial pain syndromes and fibromyalgia.
His special interests, include spinal interventional procedures and spinal cord stimulation.
Medicolegal
He has prepared reports for the over two decades for both causation and quantum on personal injury and clinical negligence in, complex pain causation and personal injury cases, including cauda equina syndrome, spinal cord injury, complex regional pain syndromes, persistent surgical pain.
He has undertaken the Cardiff University Bond Solon Civil Expert Course, attends and presents regularly at medicolegal courses.
He lectures regularly to law firm, clinical teams and medicolegal conferences on the medicolegal aspects of pain medicine.
Dr Towlerton trained as an undergraduate in medicine at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London. He read for a BSc in experimental pathology and was awarded the Award of Merit, before qualifying as a doctor with distinction in medicine in 1990.
He has written several book chapters, including back pain and pain therapies. He has published articles on Spinal Cord Stimulation for Spinal Cord Injuries and back pains.
He is chair of the British Pain Society medicolegal group.

Biopic
His passion is the relief of pain where possible and better understanding of it when not.
Dr Towlerton trained as an undergraduate in medicine at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London. He read for a BSc in experimental pathology and was awarded the Award of Merit, before qualifying as a Doctor with distinction in medicine in 1990.
He commenced training in postgraduate medical specialties at the Royal Brompton Hospital & Hammersmith Hospital before gaining Membership of the Royal College of Physicians in 1992. He further specialised in Anaesthetics & Pain Medicine and was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Anaesthetists in 1995.
He undertook fellowships in Sydney, Australia, and Seattle, USA, before taking up his substantive NHS appointment at Chelsea & Westminster Teaching Hospital, London in 2000.
At Chelsea & Westminster Hospital he led the Clinical Pain Management team involved in acute post-operative & chronic pain conditions (2002-2005). He held the post of Honorary Senior lecturer with Imperial College, London, and has sat on a number of hospital, regional and national committees. He took the post of council member for the interventional pain practice specialist interest group of the British Pain Society in 2005.
He lead the Spinal cord stimulator team at Chelsea & Westminster Hospital. He sat on the integrated spinal multidisciplinary team at Imperial Health Care Trust. He has previously held the post of board member of Fortius Clinic and the Chelsea Clinical Society.
His main professional interests include assessment and treatment of spinal conditions, interventional and regional anaesthesia, the treatment of the chronic painful conditions of neck, shoulder, low back, complex regional pain syndrome and persistent post-operative surgical pain. He sat and passed the World Institute of Pain Interventional Exams and was awarded the Fellowship of Interventional Pain Practice in October 2005.
He has written several book chapters, including back pain and pain therapies.
