Our efforts over the next eight years resulted in three publications: "Alaska Trees and Shrubs;" "Guide to Alaska Trees;" and "Atlas of United States Trees, Volume 2, Alaska Trees and Common Shrubs" (1975). Both the Guide and the Atlas are now out of print. When I first learned of the interest of the University of Alaska Press in reprinting "Alaska Trees and Shrubs," I thought immediately of making revisions, updating distribution maps and nomenclature, and even interspersing some colored photographs into the book.

Because the changes would be minor revisions in distribution and nomenclature, it was decided to delay making any revisions until a later printing; therefore, the book is essentially identical to the original "Alaska Trees and Shrubs," first published in 1972. The land ownership in Alaska has changed considerably since the book was published in 1972; one only needs to compare a current map of Alaska's federal parks, refuges, and forests with that produced on the inside front cover of this book.
