GOD, the Master, told the dry bones, “Watch this: I’m bringing the breath [ruach] of life to you and you’ll come to life. I’ll attach sinews to you, put meat on your bones, cover you with skin, and breathe life into you. ” I prophesied just as I’d been commanded. As I prophesied, there was a sound and, oh, rustling! Not when it comes to lust. Not when sexual fidelity is at stake. In the face of pornography, sexual voyeurism, and the relentless pull of sex, the past tense won’t do. Instead, Paul adopts the present tense: God is giving the Holy Spirit to the Thessalonians. There is something heart-stopping about this. When the issue at hand is sexual gratification (1 Thessalonians 4:5–6), Paul doesn’t write, “You have been filled with the Holy Spirit,” as if a single moment in time is enough to produce a life of struggle toward sexual maturity.
